Canters Woodcraft was established in Melbourne,
Australia as a father and son team in 1980, making billiards
table legs and turned furniture components. Over the
years the business had grown from occupying a small
factory in the suburb of Croydon to where it is today,
in the industrial hub of Bayswater, in a plant covering
two factories, each 40,000 square feet within one complex.
Today, Canters Woodcraft is a major billiards table
leg manufacturer and supplies to the Billiard and Pool
Table industry throughout Australia. We produce and
are experts in turned or tapered, fluted or unfluted
legs ranging in diameter from 5" up to 10"
wide.
We also service the furniture manufacturing industry
in Melbourne and beyond producing quality turned and
tapered products such as Bedposts, Blanket Rails, Dining
Table Legs, Coffee Table Legs, Hall Stand Legs, Dressing
Table Legs, Pedestal Legs, Foot Buns and Mirror Posts.
We also stock a wide range of Carved Corbels and Cabriole
(Queen Anne) Legs.
Whilst most of our bulk turnings are done in automatic
and semi-automatic lathes, we do offer a hand turning
service for individual (one-off) items and small runs.
This flexibility is vital to the success of our business
in order to cover all areas of woodturning especially
in servicing the special turning needs of Shopfitters,
Industrial Designers, Architects, Furniture Restorers
and the like. This flexibility extends to the type of
timber we use - Radiata Pine, American Oak, Victorian
Ash, Blackwood, Red Gum, Jarrah, Sepetir - just to name
a few.
In 1994, proprietor, Bill Canters decided to diversify
the business to incorporate building products - period
style decorative products which are commonplace in our
state of Victoria where there is an abundance of Federation-style
cottages, Victorian villas and Californian bungalows.
Classic Woodturning, (an already well-respected,
established period products manufacturer), was acquired
and a partner, John Maddock was brought in to manage
this business. Together with a team of skilled craftsmen,
John has successfully built Classic Woodturning to be
a major player in the specialized area of producing
elegant timber decorative products and turnings for
period-style homes in both internal and external applications.
It serviced the wholesale needs of timber yards throughout
Victoria and the individual needs of builders and home
renovators.
In October, 2007 John sold his share of the business
to Canters Woodcraft and today, we have a fully integrated
business under one management, resulting in greater
efficiencies both in the office and on the factory floor.
Rationalization in all areas of the two businesses had
meant that space is now available to accommodate a greater
level of stock enabling us to meet the demands of our
customers quickly. This is particularly important with
our stock-standard items as featured in our product
pages such as Verandah posts, Corner Brackets, Fence
Post Capitals, Finials, Bullnose, Gothic, Convex and
Concave Rafters, Decorative Barge Board Trims, Eaves
Brackets, Newel Posts, Balusters and many more. Apart
from these off-the-shelf items, Classic Woodturning
has the expertise in joinery work to produce custom-made
Gable Features, Arches, Fretwork, Friezes, Window Awnings
and Balustrades.
We also offer an on-site advisory service within the
Melbourne metropolitan area, for a small fee. This is
a worthwhile exercise for owner/builders who are unsure
of what can be achieved during the renovating process.
