Product Notes:
Reproduction work is welcomed - we are not limited to the
standard designs depicted in our catalogue & most measures
can be varied - call to discuss details.
VERANDAH POSTS
We only use the best SMFOHC (select merch free of heart centre)
Oregon (Douglas Fir) from Canada and North America for our
posts. To minimise any movement or checking as they cure,
they must remain wrapped until fully sealed and painted.
They should be installed wrapped if not being pre-painted.
Laminated and LOSP treated pine posts are also available.
It is CRITICAL that end grain & rebates be sealed
& painted before installation.
Flood coating of endgrain with a preservative prior to painting
is recommended.
They should be installed so as to shed any water. Treated
pine and oregon are NOT suitable for
"in-ground" applications - we offer 120x120 Cypress
pine as an option for this.
Customising - so long as the actual turning length
stays standard (see measures on side of post illustrations)
the turning can be moved up or down the post at no extra charge.
eg - where a balustrade post is being fitted below floor level
and the handrail when fitted has to be 1m from the floor,
or the ground slopes away & the "top square"
needs to be the same when different length posts are being
used. Turning sizes can be altered if required.
Oregon timber, particularly the fine grain "old growth"
timber has sap in it. As the timber cures and shrinks some
of the sap is squeezed to the surface. This stops once the
timber has stabilised, usually in a few months. In the interim,
mineral turps can be used to wipe off any sap which is a nuisance.
PRE-TREATMENTS
Liberal use of pre-treatments, such as , Quantum AQUATEC,
Intergrain DIMENSION 4 or Protim XJ Clear are highly recommended
for all exterior woodwork, both to stabilise, and to extend
the service life of the timber - we can supply Quantum
AQUATEC if required.
Similarly, we recommend all joints be sealed with "No
More Gaps" or an equivalent product, and that quality
exterior paints be used - beware of "fence coat"
type paints and oils which often do not seal or adequately
protect the timber.
JOINERY
LOSP treated pine is used for all of our balustrade and frieze
components and requires an
OIL BASED PRIMER before painting. It is CRITICAL that the
ends be re-treated after docking, and preferably they should
be sealed and painted prior to installation.
Our standard balustrade construction method uses a side-rebated
bottom rail - which does not require fillet & allows water
to run off. (Traditional 'trench & fillet' bottom nail
is available on request.)
Corner & eave brackets are dip treated in Quantum Aquatec
preservative.
If items are for internal use, particularly if they are to
be stained rather than painted, please advise on placing order
- Oregon and LOSP pine may not be appropriate and we may need
to use different fillers. Clear pine and standard grade KDHW
(Vic Ash) components are available on request.
